Purpose and Programming
In response to the increasing Hispanic/Latino population in Missouri, as understood from the 2000 Census, Alianzas was created in 2001 to enhance the ability of University of
Missouri Extension and its partners to respond to the needs of Hispanic/Latino immigrants and the Missouri communities that receive them. This was to be done through the
implementation of outreach programs that focus on a community-based,
collaborative learning approach.
Alianzas was initially selected for implementation in three University of Missouri Extension regions - Central, Southwest,
and West Central - due to the immense growth of their Hispanic/Latino populations between 1990 and 2000.
In January 2005 Alianzas expanded its programming to support all eight University of Missouri Extension regions. Each region
experiences unique challenges influenced by the impact of increasing Hispanic/Latino populations. Because each region has differing needs, the
development of separate strategies and educational approaches in meeting the needs of newcomers is required.
