Fiscal Year 09
In July 2008, a $2,500 grant was awarded to continue supporting the Cultural Diversity group in the region and the planning and implementation of a Binational Health Week fair that was held October 7, 2008 in Saint Joseph. The Local Binational Health Week Council reported that approximately 35 people, including children, attended the event. The health screenings and services provided included: weight/height, glucose, cholesterol, hemoglobin, blood pressure, mammogram referral, vision, nutrition, and pain management. In addition, because back problems had previously been reported as a concern, a physical therapist was available to demonstrate proper lifting techniques and consult with participants.
A Regional Specialist and two community members supported the Alianzas Cultural Academy.
Fiscal
Year 06-07
In August 2006, Alianzas awarded $3,000 to support the provision of educational
materials and booth space at festivals and other events, travel for meetings,
Bi-National Health Week activities, and the cultural diversity group in St.
Joseph.
On the follow-up evaluation form, it was indicated that "several of the intended purposes [of the fund request initiative] were achieved. The Cultural Diversity Team was provided with very high quality programming to help team members better understand needs and provide services to Hispanics. We also provided many children's books in Spanish at the Pumpkinfest. The books were donated by United Way. We also provided tornado safety information in Spanish at the Courthouse...By helping service providers understand the needs of this population, we were also able to provide families with the information and services they needed."
Fiscal Year
05-06
In January 2006, Alianzas awarded $3,000 to support training for basic Spanish skills and educational materials. Monies were also used to cover Alianzas
initiative travel expenses for regional meetings and purchase reference materials in the region. This included the active involvement of regional staff
in a St. Joseph cultural diversity group that strives to assist the community in becoming better prepared to communicate with and respond to the needs of
Spanish speaking immigrants in the region.
As a result, the capacity of University of Missouri Extension and its campus partners was afforded the opportunity to be enhanced to effectively and efficiently respond to the needs of Hispanic/Latino residents in the northwest region, as well as the communities that receive them. Furthermore, it was intended that Hispanic/Latino immigrants would be more positively received and integrated into Missouri communities.
