Fiscal Year 09
In June 2009, a grant was awarded to support a Summer Youth Program in Boone
County that promoted healthy eating and healthy lifestyle for 20 Hispanic/Latino
children. The 4-H Statewide Specialist is collaborating in this
initiative.
Two Regional and one OSEDA Specialist attended the Alianzas Cultural Academy. In addition, in this region, the HUman Environmental Sciences provides education, health, and nutrition information to Hispanic consumers. The Hispanic populations are learning to eat healthier, more nutritious meals while ensuring they maintain their cultural dishes as part of their meal plans.
Fiscal Year 06-07
In August 2006, Alianzas awarded $1,700 to support the “Stay Strong, Stay Healthy” program
for Hispanic/Latino residents in Boone County, which partnered University of
Missouri Extension and the Latino Center of Columbia.
Fiscal Year 05-06
In November 2005, Alianzas awarded $3,000 to support the Callaway County Spanish Language Play Group in coordinating, implementing and evaluating a cultural
exchange experience for English and Spanish-speaking parents and their children, birth to five years of age. The initiative offered informal Spanish
language lessons to adults and young children.
As a result, Hispanic/Latino and other community residents were afforded the opportunity to develop interest and trust in community programs and multi-cultural activities. Also, they were allowed the ability to overcome communication challenges and, as a result, gain a greater understanding of their neighbors and the community resources that are available to them.
